As a citizen, you are liable for damages you cause to other citizens or their property. Even if you inadvertently cause it, you must pay for or repair that damage. This is called civil liability, or civil liability for short.

A civil liability insurance policy, or "a BA" for short, takes the compensation or repair costs on your behalf.

Civil liability insurance is an essential part of:

  • family insurance. It protects you when you or a family member causes unintentional harm to others

  • the BA car. A compulsory insurance that intervenes in case of physical and material damage you cause with the car

  • home or fire insurance. This usually also protects you when your home causes damage to third parties

If no one is liable for the damages or injuries that have occurred, the BA insurance will not intervene. In that case, you speak to your accident insurance, for example.
